It seems each year people are becoming more and more vocal about their view on Falling back and Springing forward. There are those that love the extra daylight in the morning and others that love that extra hour of light in the afternoon. Then there are those who say, “I don’t care! Just stop messing with my sleep already!”.
Whichever side of the argument you are on, Daylight Savings can be a used for good and not evil! Since it comes twice a year it’s a great reminder to take care of some of the bi-annual chores we need to tackle around the house.
For example, the idea of changing the smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries in your home every time Daylight Savings Time begins/ends is a wonderful plan! This idea is not new, and one that many Government agencies have been promoting for years. It is a great way to make sure these life saving devices stay functioning properly and the task gets done. Check your batteries every month and be sure to change the batteries when you change the clocks!
You can also use the time change as a reminder to clean out your dryer vents. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, tens of thousands of fires start every year by clothes dryers. Many times this is due to a clogged dryer vent full of lint and debris. Clean out the inside and around your lint trap as well as under and behind the dryer itself at least twice a year. By doing so and following proper clothes cleaning procedures, you significantly lower your chances of having a dryer-induced fire.
This is also a great time to go through your medicine cabinet and toss out anything that has expired or is no longer needed. If you are unsure of the expiration date call your local pharmacy or look online on FDA.gov. When it comes to anything ingestible, especially medicine, it is good to use the old adage, “When in doubt, throw it out!”. Some medication may have specific disposal directions. Your pharmacy is a great resource for this as well.
How about your mattress? That thing should be flipped over least twice a year as well. Go ahead and use Daylight Savings as your reminder for this heavy duty must-do too!
