Ways to Get That Festive Smell in Your Home

It’s beginning to…SMELL a lot like Christmas!!

Christmas smells are the best! Peppermint, gingerbread, citrus, cinnamon, pine, vanilla and a ton of other scents.

Here’s the thing, you know how certain smells bring up a specific memory or emotion? Well, it turns out that this is an actual biological thing? According to The Smell Report, the human sense of smell is directly connected to the limbic system, which is thought by many to be home base for our emotions. So, as Kate Fox, the author of The Smell Report states, “Smell sensations are relayed to the cortex, where ‘cognitive’ recognition occurs, only after the deepest parts of our brains have been stimulated. Thus, by the time we correctly name a particular scent as, for example, ‘vanilla’ , the scent has already activated the limbic system, triggering more deep-seated emotional responses.”

So, thanks to our smell-feeling brain powers, we often need to have more than just the sparkling lights and decorations to help us get in the holiday spirit. Our nose also wants to get in on the holiday fun!

There are a ton of ways to bring that Christmas smell in your home. Here’s a few of our favorites:

A Simmer pot  is an easy way to get the scent of Christmas throughout your home in no time. There are a ton of ways to make this happen. For most you will want to start by filling a small pot with water and set to simmer.  Toss in a few cloves, some ginger, add in a cup of apple cider and a few orange peels and you’ll be all set.  Check out the delicious smelling recipes from Design Improvised,  Make Huas.

Candles are another great and super easy option. You can simply go to your favorite store and buy a candle (or 20!) in the scent you desire or even branch out and try making your own. Hey, if you do make your own candles, go ahead and make a few extra to give as gifts! Hello Glow put together a great tutorial for dyi-ing your own tri-scented candle. That’s right! Three Christmas scents in one! Fancy!

And be sure to bring in the kiddos to the smells of the season!  There are all kinds of fun activities such as scented Cinnamon ornaments which can also double as sweet gifts, orange pomanders like Homemade Gifts Made Easy shares, and spice sacks are all easy and great ways to get your kids in the scented scene!

Christmas is absolutely a holiday for all the senses and the heart! What a wonderful time of year!
